Spooktacular Pop Up Picnic

Halloween is a week from Saturday!  2020 has been a real nightmare but you can still have all the fun Halloween feels! Here are some DIY picnic tips for a Halloween-themed gathering at home.

  • Sweet + Savory Halloween Grazing Box: We chose a few Halloween faves and some out-of-the-box treats to make this easy and tasty grazing box that you can DIY!

    • Choose your snacks: mix sweet and salty, crunchy and chewy for a fun variety! We went with Veggie Chips in fun ghost shapes, Utz’s Pretzels, Candy Corn + Pumpkins (a personal favorite, don’t hate!) Plus creepy gumballs: eyeballs, green bumpy balls and more! The candy is a great opportunity to add color!

    • Inviting guests? Pre-pack the food in individual servings to cut down on touching and sharing- custom labels, paint pens, fun stickers and even permanent marker work well for personalizing!

    • Make it healthy! We paired our grazing box with a pot of hummus (Costco individual hummus packs- love these!) and witch’s fingers (cucumber slices with little red pepper fingernails!) Carrot sticks, asparagus, jicama and other veggies work well too! Get spooky with a drizzle of witch’s blood- I mean balsamic vinegar glaze.

  • Spooky décor: Here are a few tips to keep it easy and festive!

    • Use what you’ve got! Get into your Halloween headspace and see your everyday items in a new light. We’re huge fans of repurposing what you have (it’s easy, cheap, fast and great for the environment! We had 3 pumpkins, a few interesting glass jars and vases and these old-timey lanterns, everything else is our regular picnic décor. Pro Tip: everything is décor! Food, plates, utensils, cups, it all counts so curate accordingly.

    • Say It Loud! Signage, message boards, throw pillows: they can be informational, funny, decorative or all 3!  There are so many great Halloween puns just dying to be used (couldn’t resist!) Want to create your own tabletop décor? Print your favorite Halloween phrase, find a frame in the house and display it with your tasty Halloween spread. Our favorite bar sign: “I’m Here for the Boos”

    • Don’t Forget Lighting! Make the most of the night with moody candles, light strings, lanterns and more. Jack-o-lanterns are a huge bonus!
